Curriculum: Teaching a Personal Finance Course

Do you have questions regarding how to integrate the Take Charge Today Curriculum into your classroom? This section can help you.

I am new to Take Charge Today. What is the best way to start using and understanding the curriculum?

We have a page specifically designed to assist new Take Charge Today users. Please review the Curriculum Design page to learn about the large amount of resources Take Charge Today offers.

Do I have to follow the Take Charge Today lesson plans word for word for it to work?

That is completely up to you! You may follow the lesson plan word for word if you choose; however, you may deviate from the lesson plan to make it fit the unique needs of you and your students. Take Charge Today lesson plans are designed to have options and to be flexible and adaptable to different classrooms. Add in additional discussion questions, add an Active Learning Tool to help review content, or simply change the facilitation by using the information sheet instead of the PowerPoint. The possibilities are endless. We always tell educators that if you are giving your students the important concepts within financial education then you are doing it right!

What age group is appropriate for the Take Charge Today lessons?

Take Charge Today has different curriculum types that were developed with specific age groups in mind. The Introductory Level curriculum is intended for grades 7-9. The Advanced Level curriculum is intended for grades 10-12 or young adults with limited personal finance knowledge. Both curriculum types can be used to adapt to specific classroom needs. The curriculum types are also explained and linked on the Curriculum Design webpage.

Take Charge Today offers many different lesson plans for different grade levels and time restrictions. How do I understand the differences between the curriculum types and know what resources are available for each subject area in order to choose the resources that best fit my personal classroom needs?

Take Charge Today has several pages that will help you fully understand all of the resources available and assist you. Visit the Course Guide page for more information.

The Lesson Library Advanced Search feature can also be used to determine resources available. Use the Lesson Library to search keywords or by specific fields!

Do you have any recommendations for the order of what to teach?

Take Charge Today offers Course Guides for many different course lengths, including two-week, nine-week, and year-long courses.

Have the lesson plans, activities, and ideas ever been tested with students before?

Yes! Each lesson plan that Take Charge Today has on the website has been tested in a classroom before we release it to the public. We provide our educator team members with the lesson plans, and they provide feedback and evaluations. Then, the Take Charge Today leadership team makes corrections, implements suggestions, and gives it back to classroom teachers to test again. We do not release the lesson plan to the public until it has been tested several times from a variety of individuals in a diverse setting of classrooms.

I’m teaching an online course, do you have any materials available to assist me?

Yes! We have taken our Student Workbook pages and made them interactive PDF files. The PDF files have text boxes where students may type their responses, save, and submit! Download the interactive worksheets for anylesson plan. If you are posting these files for students to access, they MUST be posted on a secure school server or password protected website. *Be sure to download the latest version of Adobe Reader at http://get.adobe.com/reader/. View the Copyright Message if you have any questions regarding posting student materials on secure websites.

Additionally, you can find all of our student workbooks in Google as well.

A lesson plan that I previously used was completely updated, and I can no longer find it on the Take Charge Today website. Can I still use this lesson plan?

Take Charge Today strives to provide educators with current, up-to-date lesson plans, and wants to encourage educators to download the new and improved versions of lesson plans.

How much money do I need to budget in order to purchase the materials necessary to teach a Take Charge Today course?

The Take Charge Today curriculum is FREE! Download all of the lesson plans, answer keys, PowerPoints, etc., for no cost! Although the lessons are free to download and use, there are many different options for facilitation in each lesson plan and some include a variety of materials that may be used to enhance your course. These may include markers or “art” supplies for certain conclusion options, or a movie or game from our Active Learning Tools. The top of every lesson plan lists the supplies needed and some are found outside of the Take Charge Today website.

Curriculum: Preparing Materials

Do you have questions regarding how to best prepare the materials to teach a Take Charge Today course or individual lesson plan? Let these questions and answers help make your preparation time a breeze.

I just downloaded a PowerPoint but it doesn't match the lesson plan I downloaded last year. Why is this?

Take Charge Today is constantly updating curriculum materials so check out the date at the bottom of the curriculum material to see when the resource was updated. You may need to re-download the updated lesson plan. Or, there may be a mistake we don’t know about, so let us know!

Is the Take Charge Today curriculum aligned to my state’s standards?

The Take Charge curriculum is not aligned to individual state standards. The curriculum is aligned to several national standards though and the crosswalks can be found on the Standards page.

May I re-post an entire Take Charge Today lesson plan on a secure website?

We ask that you do not post an entire Take Charge Today lesson plan or the materials meant for only educator use on another website, even if it is a secure website. The Take Charge Today curriculum is continually updated based upon industry trends and educator feedback, and each person’s account on the Take Charge Today website tracks what curriculum they have downloaded. Therefore, it is important that individuals download lesson plans from the Take Charge Today website using their own account to be sure they are accessing the most up-to-date materials. However, it is ok to post live URL links to the desired lesson plan download page on the Take Charge Today website. That way the site doesn’t have to be searched to find the desired materials.

Please do not post answer keys on unsecure websites. Students can access those in Google searches.

Technical Problems

Are you having troubles with a Take Charge Today PowerPoint Presentation or other lesson plan component? We identified common problems and solutions to help you.

The PowerPoint presentation I downloaded from the Take Charge Today website has many formatting issues- text is not fitting within textboxes; some textboxes are off- centered, etc. Why is this? Should I contact Take Charge Today to have them fix these issues?

All Take Charge Today lesson plans are thoroughly reviewed and tested before being released to the public. Therefore, if you find many formatting issues within a PowerPoint presentation, this is most likely caused by using different versions of Microsoft PowerPoint or when it was uploaded to Google. If there is only one formatting error, then there is a possibility that it is an error that needs to be fixed by Take Charge Today. In this case, email the Take Charge Today team at takechargetoday@arizona.edu indicating the lesson plan number and the slide containing the error.

I think I found an error in a lesson plan, what should I do?

Take Charge Today strives to provide the most up-to-date, correct materials to educators. If you believe you have found an error on a lesson plan, please email the Take Charge Today staff at takechargetoday@arizona.edu explaining the error and the specific place it was found.
