Over one’s lifetime, a person can experience many changes in jobs, careers, and personal roles. This can happen because of decisions made or from circumstances beyond control. The movie, Mr. Holland’s Opus, demonstrates the variety of changes one may experience in the work and personal life.

In this Active Learning Tools, students evaluate the many roles Mr. Holland plays in his life and how he interpreted success after watching the movie Mr. Holland’s Opus. To reflect upon the movie, students write an essay about the differences between needs and wants, how both are determined by individual values, and what defines success.
