In this lesson, participants will explore the total costs associated with each major expenditure category by creating a personal “money bag.” By analyzing multiple family scenarios, participants will learn how everyone spends money based on their personal values and perceptions of needs and wants. To conclude the lesson, participants may allocate tokens to create a personalized spending plan for the Fernandez and/or Jenkins family. To assess the lesson, participants may create a story about the Jordan family based on their knowledge of the family’s spending decisions. A math reinforcement worksheet is available for additional math emphasis.

  • Identify the five major expenditures in a spending plan
  • Use guideline percentages to determine spending limits for each major expenditure category
  • Assess the contributing factors families must consider before making major expenditure decisions
