The Case for Saving is an introductory lesson designed to be taught in one class period or in a workshop setting. Participants will read picture books about saving including Alexander, Who Used to Be Rich Last Sunday, The Big Buck Adventure and Berenstain Bears’ Trouble with Money. Participants will also watch several video clips about banks and saving from Mary Poppins and It’s a Wonderful Life. Finally, participants will think about saving themes in their favorite movie or TV show.

Lesson Objectives

  • Comprehend the reasons we should save
  • Realize the ways in which saving benefits us
  • Realize the how and why saving is important in our lives
  • Understand the connections between depository institutions and concepts of saving money
  • Relate saving money to positive benefits later on, such as purchasing wants and needs
